You simply need to be willing…
In October 2018, Jessica Garibay had no idea that one heartbreaking moment would become the beginning of something that would save hundreds of dogs.
It started with a stray dog suffering from a devastating 360-degree laceration around her neck. Jessica immediately began searching for help, calling associations in Puerto Vallarta and surrounding areas, hoping someone could step in. But no one could. At the time, Jessica was already fostering a puppy named Toast and had no room to bring another dog into her home. Still, walking away was never an option.
Instead of waiting for someone else to act, she became the help the dog needed.
Jessica rushed the injured dog to a veterinarian, covered the medical expenses herself, and turned to Facebook groups hoping to find support. That’s when Nancy Middleton entered the story. Nancy offered a solution: once the dog recovered, she could stay on a ranch Nancy owned — land originally purchased for charitable use. But until the dog was healthy enough, Jessica continued ensuring she received proper care.
Then came another challenge. The dog was pregnant, close to giving birth, and the pregnancy could not be terminated. Tragically, after delivering her puppies, every one of them passed away within a day.
When the mother dog finally healed, Jessica and Nancy transported her to the ranch property. But the land had no fencing yet. Just days later, the dog escaped her kennel and disappeared. Despite every effort, she was never found.
For many people, that kind of heartbreak would have been enough to stop trying. For Jessica, it became the reason to begin.
That loss planted the vision for A Dog’s New Life — a shelter that would never turn away a dog in need. Jessica told Nancy she wanted to build a place where abandoned, injured, and forgotten dogs would always have somewhere safe to go. Nancy believed in that dream enough to offer her land for the shelter, and Jessica began building it with nothing more than determination, compassion, and her own limited resources.
Confidence rarely arrives all at once. Sometimes it grows quietly through moments exactly like these — moments where there is no perfect plan, only the willingness to keep going.
In February 2019, support finally began to grow. A group of people from Bucerías stepped in to help, fundraising events were organized, and the shelter’s first bazaar brought the community together around a shared mission. Volunteers became involved, and little by little, the shelter transformed.
New kennels were built. A water pump was installed to provide clean water for the dogs. A walking program was created, producing incredible changes in the dogs’ happiness, confidence, and socialization. What began as one woman refusing to ignore a dog in pain slowly became a rescue that would impact hundreds of lives.
Today, A Dog’s New Life stands as more than just a shelter. It is proof of what can happen when compassion is matched with action. The rescue has grown into a safe haven with clean kennels, play areas, dedicated volunteers, and a community committed to giving dogs the second chances they deserve.
Jessica’s story is a reminder that you do not need to have everything figured out before you begin. You simply need to be willing — willing to act, willing to care, and willing to keep moving forward even when the road is difficult.
Because real change rarely starts with certainty.
